Wind & Fire Devotional – Day 1

“Flesh gives birth to flesh.  But the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” – John 3:6

The Holy Spirit loves to give birth to new things.  “Spirit”– as we’ll call him– was present at…

      • The Birth of Creation

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.  – Genesis 1:1-2

Spirit was present at…

      • The Birth of Jesus

Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. – Matthew 1:18

Spirit was in the delivery room at…

      • The Birth of the Church

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place… All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. – Acts 2:1-4

Giving birth is the Spirit’s specialty.  He loves to breathe new life– God’s own dynamic life!– into things.  My question for you is this:

“What new thing is the Holy Spirit preparing to birth in you?”

Over the next 40 days, you are going on a journey to personally experience the breakthrough power of God’s own Spirit.  The Spirit of Jesus. The Holy Spirit. Through this experience, I believe God is preparing to birth something deep in your soul.  That may come in the form of a:

– new prayer language

– personal revelation of God’s love

– supernatural healing

– boldness in evangelism

– radical generosity

– sensitivity of heart

– divine guidance

– fresh anointing

Whatever form it takes, I do not know.  But God already knows. He who formed you in your mother’s womb is preparing to birth something new in your life & walk with Jesus.

Are you ready to go deeper?

Each morning, you will receive a devotional custom-designed to highlight an aspect of the Holy Spirit’s role in your life.  My friend Kimberly Coyle– a professional writer, mom, & Liquid Church member– has prepared each day with a Scriptural reflection, key insight, and prayer to meditate upon.  Use these to jump start your day thinking about & praying to the Holy Spirit. Where you have time, look up the Scripture that is mentioned & ask the Spirit for insight into God’s Word.

I believe that after 40 days of pursuing the Spirit, you will discover God birthing something fresh & new in your walk with Jesus.

A word of caution:  Births are both messy & beautiful.  If you’ve ever witnessed a mother giving birth to a newborn boy who screams through tiny lungs… or a little girl who looks with wide-eyed wonder at the new world slowing coming into focus around her… You know every birth is a miracle.  A messy miracle performed by the most powerful force in the Universe: the Spirit of God Himself.

Every earnest seeker who wants a fresh revelation of the Holy Spirit encounters challenges & setbacks.  But don’t let that discourage the work God does in you over the next 40 days. Instead, embrace the labor & prepare to witness something beautiful.

The birth of the Holy Spirit in YOU.

Holy Spirit, come.  Birth something new & vital in the deepest places of my soul.  I want more of You. Awaken a hunger in me for a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit.  Send your holy fire. Breathe your breath on me & bring me to life in Jesus’ name.

My heart is open & I yield my life to Jesus.  For the next 40 days, reveal your purpose for my life.  Convict, comfort, and counsel me. Spirit, I ask for a fresh outpouring of your love, joy, and power in my life so I can serve You and others in Christ’s name.  Amen.
