WHAT IS THE SPIRIT BIRTHING IN YOU?
And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” -Luke 1:35-37
We see the fingerprints of the Holy Spirit all over this season of Mary’s life. Through his power, Mary conceives a child. During her pregnancy, Scripture shows us the Holy Spirit showing up time and time again: speaking to Joseph, filling cousin Elizabeth at the sound of Mary’s greeting, and inhabiting the babies in both of these women’s wombs. At the heart of Mary’s story lies the Holy Spirit. He is the means by which she will give birth.
Birth inspired by the Holy Spirit is still a messy one. Mary carried her son in her womb for nine months—nine long months of morning sickness and sleepless nights and uncomfortable aches and pains. Her skin stretched to make room for this child, to create a place inside of her for the seed of the Holy Spirit to grow. She gave birth in pain, crying out, squeezing her husband’s hand, hoping with each push to see the fruit of her labor.
Nothing is impossible with God, said the angel. We know Mary believed this, but I wonder sometimes if we forget that what was true for Mary, is also true for us today. The Holy Spirit is at work, and he wants to birth something new in you. Perhaps you’ve felt Him stirring in your spirit, planting seeds of hope for healing or restoration. Maybe He wants to birth a deeper desire for His presence, His gifts, or His fruit.
Don’t fear the birthing process. Like Mary’s, it will be painful and hard and messy. Allow yourself to stretch and make room for these seeds of hope to grow inside of you. When you have labored long and feel wrung out from the effort, trust that the Holy Spirit labors alongside you. He will bring the promise to fruition. Your life will bear good fruit.
Holy Spirit, show me what you want to birth in my life this year. Heal my body, restore my relationships, and set me free from the wounds of the past. Birth in me a spirit of hope. Help me not to fear the messiness associated with growth and new life, but instead to trust nothing is impossible with you. In Jesus’ name & for His glory, amen.
