HE DWELLS IN YOU
Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God. -1 Corinthians 6:19
As we conclude our forty day journey of studying the Holy Spirit, it’s good to remind ourselves why understanding the Spirit and his ways matters to us as believers. It’s easy to push the Spirit aside when he remains a fuzzy idea, an unknown, a stranger. But, he’s no longer a stranger. He is the third member of the Trinity, the very Spirit of God living inside our bodies. We are the temple in which he dwells.
To the Jews, the temple stood at the center of all life. It’s where they worshipped, prayed, studied, sacrificed, and received forgiveness for their sins. When they wanted to meet with God, they took themselves to the temple.
We no longer have to go somewhere to meet with God. Because of Jesus, our Emmanuel, God is here with us. Because of the Holy Spirit, God dwells inside of us. God reached across the great divide of sin and came to us, and we are now the temple. We are now a place of worship, a living sacrifice, a home for the Spirit of God.
How does this change the way you worship? The way you pray? How does your encounter with the Spirit change the way you live day by day?
Holy Spirit, thank you for coming near, for never leaving me, and for teaching me new ways to worship and pray. I invite you to make your home permanently in me– today and for the rest of my life. Amen.
